Overview & Philosophy
Mark founded the club in 2006, originally for U.11's and U.13's beginners. Since the founding of the 3 or 4 dozen students taught by him annually, most left London or for other schools, or were encouraged by him to progress to a ‘main’ fencing club. Only 5 fencers stayed through to cadet ( u.17 ) and junior ( u.20 ) level. All five won medals at Local and Regional level, and from these special individuals there grew a need to add to our coaching staff and establish a sparring platform for u.15’s and cadets ( u.17’s ). In 2015 two students achieved international selections ; ( cadet mens foil - GB representation level for the European championships & junior U.20 Womens foil for SWE at world cup level ). As at January 2019 Battersea / thefencingschool has 3 girls in the top ten for u.15 & u.13 category and another 6 fencers within top 20 of national rankings with national selections every year since 2015.
In our main club sessions ( 30-40 fencers ) there are 10 pistes and open sparring at a really great modern Sports Hall. It has breakout sitting areas, outdoor play area & court, parking & canteen. We often run training camps at Easter, summer & the autumn half term. Our ‘home’ base at The Royal Academy of Dance has 3 pistes, wall mounted scoring and target pads, & a small permanent armoury. This is where we do individual lessons and run squad training, as well as school classes.

We offer sponsored places for junior beginners on a needs assessed basis. Highly experienced fencers are also considered for partial or full subsidy.
We have good results for our U. 11, U.13, U.15 and cadet fencers and a very active club. This is our focus. We are highly ‘results’ driven, as we believe that an aspirational environment brings out the best in the child. That’s not to say we don’t have ‘social’ fencing , but we nurture the students towards finding their own limits. The club only accepts seniors who will fit in technically and tactically and help towards this goal. Some sessions are mixed U.15's and upwards with seniors. We do offer private lessons for adults, beginners or competitors but we can't offer adult beginners courses as our coaches are fully occupied with the development programmes, which include significant subsidised community outreach.
We are non for profit club, and all our surplus goes into facility and coaching and helping with fees for those on sponsor programme.
